This is a JIRA Administrator guide to enable Time Tracking and configure the necessary fields. Please note, these settings and configurations are only available to JIRA administrator or users with administrator privileges and required to be enabled. Jira's time tracking feature enables users to record the time they spend working on issues.
Note: Capacity Tracker uses default Jira time tracking features. Also note that Jira’s 'Remaining Estimate' time tracking field is used by Capacity Tracker to calculate the amount of remaining work for the users.
Configure time tracking for Jira Cloud
Configure time tracking permissions
To track their time, you must grant users the Work On Issues permission in their project. To verify your project permissions for time tracking:
Select
> Issues.
Click Permission schemes.
Next to the permission scheme you want to configure, click Permissions.
In the Time tracking permissions section, go to the Work On Issues permission and click Edit.
Select the users, groups or project roles that need to log work on issues.
Click Grant.
Enable or disable time tracking in projects
Time tracking is always enabled in Jira Cloud projects. You can control whether the feature is used in your projects by:
Showing or hiding the Time tracking field in your classic projects' field configurations. Learn more about field configurations.
Adding or removing the Time tracking field on your next-gen projects' issue types. Learn how to customize an issue’s fields in next-gen projects.
Enable time tracking (Jira legacy interface)
Select the Jira icon (, , , or ) > Jira administration > Issues.
Under ISSUE FEATURES, select Time Tracking.
Turn the Enable time tracking option on or off.
Enable time tracking (Jira new interface)
Select the Jira icon (, , , or ) > Jira settings > Issues.
Under ISSUE FEATURES, select Time Tracking.
Turn the Enable time tracking option on or off.
Configure time tracking in project screens and scheme
Jira legacy UI
Steps: Administrator icon→ Click on “Issues”→ Select “Screens”→ Select on your project specific screen schemes→ Click on your project specific scheme→ Lists “Field Tab”→ Add “Time tracking”.
Jira new UI
Steps: JIRA Dashboard→ Click on “Settings”→ Click on “Issues”→ Click on “Screens”→ Select your project screen schemes and default scheme→ Click on “Configure”→ Go to lists “Field Tab”→ Add “Time tracking” from the drop-down menu.
Enable display of time tracking fields within tasks/sub-tasks
Steps: Go to Projects→ Open any sub-task→ Click “Edit”→ Select “Configure fields”→ Select “Time Tracking”. Users can see and use original time tracking fields (estimates, remaining estimates) in the project.
If you do not see the time tracking field in the selection list, please check following options.
Click on “Where is my field?”→ Start typing “Time Tracking”→ Add once appeared.
If the “time tracking” selection option is not listed, then please contact your JIRA administrator to enable, per guidelines above on how to add field to a project scheme screen. Following is an example error message that you can send to your Admin along with instructions.
Configuring time tracking for Jira Server
Jira's time tracking feature enables users to record the time they spend working on issues.
Note:
Before users can specify time estimates and log work, they must be granted the Work On Issues permission for the relevant project(s).
For all of the following procedures, you must be logged in as a user with the Jira Administrators global permission.
Enabling time tracking for Jira Server
Choose
> Issues.
Select Issue Features > Time Tracking to open the Time Tracking page.
Click the 'Activate' button to turn time tracking ON.
